Trucks, in particular, have significant blind spot areas, and the area of limited visibility for truck drivers is larger on their left side. When overtaking, it is recommended to use the right lane. In India, where cars are configured with right-hand drive, visibility is typically better on the right side compared to the left. On highways, overtaking from the right side is preferable because there is no turning lane on that side where a vehicle could suddenly change direction. Due to the right-hand drive setup, drivers also tend to be more attentive to their right side than their left.
Hence, it is advisable to always overtake from the right side. When overtaking larger vehicles such as buses and trucks, it is important to execute the maneuver swiftly and signal your intentions by flashing your headlights and sounding your horn. These are fundamental road courtesies that can help prevent potential risks. Furthermore, it is crucial to remain attentive while driving. If you start feeling fatigued, it is recommended to pull over and take a rest. Alternatively, if possible, consider letting someone else drive.
